"When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible,
he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he
is very probably wrong." - Clarke's First Law

Maximum Lifespan by Roy L. Walford, M.D., 1983.

This book is an easily accessible and thorough account of aging research. Even though it is a bit out of date and out of print (you may find it at a used bookstore like I did) it remains a great introduction to the art and science of life extension for a lay person.

This classic describes the history of gerontology and approaches todays prospects for life extension with contagious enthusiasm and optimism.
