This novel chronicles the long life of Woodrow Wilson Smith also known as Lazarus Long. Lazarus is the product of a selective breeding program to extend the human lifespan. This program is run by the Howard families who use financial incentives to manage their program of selective breeding. This once demonstrates the prophetic power of science fiction. A similar type of experiment has actually been done and has doubled the lifespan of fruit flies. Currently a similar experiment is being undertaken in mice.

This book is the account of a historian charged to record the life of the longest living human. The writing is vintage Heinlein while the scope and the subject matter are ideal for anyone interested in life extension.
